Ask a Baby Blogger: Why Can't You Breastfeed a Baby on a Schedule? - Blog Entry

13 Feb 2007 10:19 PM

Don't want to be too pushy here, but schedules can be a great thing for everybody. I have two boys, and have breastfed roughly on 2 1/2 to 3 hour schedules with both of them. With parenting there is a lot of guesswork, trying to figure out what your child needs. A schedule helps mom to understand what to expect. Of course you feed baby if he's hungry! That completely goes without saying. (Babywise emphasizes this point over and over again, by the way.) But you can also get baby use to eating full feedings, and you will know when to expect that baby will be hungry again. With scheduled feedings, feeding times are not carved in stone, there is just a normal flow to the day and everyone is happy because mom knows when to feed baby (and doesn't have to keep shoving her breast in baby's face whenever he cries.)

Who Is Responsible for Your Child's Education? - Blog Entry

08 Feb 2007 03:01 PM

You are right on!! If there was suppose to be a distinct separation between what is learned at school and what is learned at home, then the parents should be accountable to teach manners and values! However, there is not such a distinction. I think that any parent who wants to shove all of the responsibilities for learning to the teachers is really just insecure (and maybe lazy). They feel guilty that their child is not learning everything and so they want to blame it on someone else.

Ask a Food Blogger: How Do You Create a Menu Plan? - Blog Entry

08 Feb 2007 01:17 PM

Great tips. I do a meal plan for our family, but it's just a little more flexible to suit our family. I plan for about two weeks' worth of meals, but don't have specific days of the week planned for most of them (unless there's a special event or something). After I have done my shopping, I put a list of meals up on the fridge. Then, throughout the week I can take each day as it comes and decide which of the meals I would like to prepare. Some of the meals are perfect for busy days, others are more time-intensive. I just have to think about dinner sometime during the day to make sure that I can defrost meat or start the meal at the proper time.

Maintaining Your 72-Hour Kit - Blog Entry

Actually, we didn't have MREs in our 72-hour kit. We had nonperishable foods like granola bars, ramen noodles, etc. MREs should last 7 or more years.

Internet Grocer: You've Got to Check out this Website! - Blog Entry

I just found this website a few weeks ago, so I haven't gotten to try anything yet. I am planning on ordering a few things to try, like butter, cheese, ground beef. They sell dented cans at a discount so you can test the products before you buy them in bulk.

Internet Grocer: You've Got to Check out this Website! - Blog Entry

I don't even remember how I found this website, just surfing around I suppose. My guess is that there are some high-quality chefs who have worked hard on preparing good meals for our military serviceworkers, and that's why the MREs are such good quality...just a guess though. Some places sell canned ground beef that is already cooked, but this is the only place I have found that sells it precooked--it's a lot more versatile that way.

Five Reasons to Store Food - Blog Entry

It's true, Libby that many people are going "paycheck to paycheck" with their food supply as well as their income. In fact, more and more people don't even make dinner at home, so they might have less than a week's worth of food in the house.

My Problem with Saving on Groceries - Blog Entry

12 Jan 2007 02:16 PM

Thanks for the tips. I really like the idea of keeping some snacks in the car! Today, I left the kids with my mom for a couple of hours and went shopping. By the time I was done I was nearly shaking, I was so hungry. A small snack stashed in the car could have saved me the $1.59 I spent on a burger. Great idea, Julie.
